SSH Command Generator

Build SSH commands for remote connections, file transfers, and port forwarding.

Features

  • Configure SSH connection options
  • Build commands for remote execution and file transfer
  • Generate local or remote port forwarding commands

How to use it

  1. Choose the SSH operation.
  2. Enter the host, user, port, and optional key or paths.
  3. Review and copy the generated command.

Example and use cases

Build an SSH command to connect to a remote server using a non-default port and a private key file.

Useful for preparing SSH and SCP commands for server administration and secure file transfers.

SSH Reference

Common SSH commands

SSH is commonly used for remote Linux administration, application deployment, server troubleshooting and secure file transfers.

Connect to a server

ssh username@server-ip

Use a custom port

ssh -p 2222 username@server-ip

Use an SSH key

ssh -i ~/.ssh/id_ed25519 username@server-ip

Run a remote command

ssh username@server-ip "ls -la /var/www"

Copy a file to server

scp ./app.zip username@server-ip:/var/www/

Copy a file from server

scp username@server-ip:/var/log/app.log ./

What is SSH?

SSH, or Secure Shell, is a network protocol used to securely access and manage remote computers. Developers and system administrators commonly use SSH to connect to Linux servers, deploy applications, inspect logs and execute commands remotely.

SSH normally authenticates users with passwords or, preferably, public-key authentication. The SSH client runs locally and establishes an encrypted connection with the remote SSH server.

How to use the SSH Command Generator

1

Choose operation

Select connection, remote command, SCP, tunneling or SSH config.

2

Enter server

Add your SSH username, hostname or IP address and port.

3

Configure options

Add an SSH key, jump host or other command options.

4

Copy command

Copy the generated command and review it before execution.

SSH key authentication

SSH keys provide public-key authentication without requiring a password for every connection. A private key stays on the client machine while the corresponding public key is installed on the server.

ssh -i ~/.ssh/id_ed25519 ubuntu@server.example.com

SSH port forwarding

SSH tunneling can securely forward traffic between local and remote systems. It is commonly used to access services that are not directly exposed to the public internet.

ssh -L 8080:localhost:3000 ubuntu@server.example.com

Important SSH security practices

  • • Keep private SSH keys secret and protect them with appropriate file permissions.
  • • Prefer SSH key authentication where appropriate instead of password-only authentication.
  • • Verify the server host key before trusting a new server.
  • • Avoid disabling host key verification unless you understand the security consequences.
  • • Avoid putting passwords or sensitive credentials directly into shell commands.
  • • Use least-privilege accounts for routine server administration.

FAQ

SSH Command Generator FAQ

What is the default SSH port?

The standard SSH port is 22. A server can be configured to use a different port.

What does ssh -i do?

The -i option specifies the private identity file that the SSH client should use for authentication.

What is SCP?

SCP is a secure file-copy mechanism that uses SSH to transfer files between systems.

What is an SSH jump host?

A jump host, also called a bastion host, acts as an intermediate server through which an SSH connection reaches another server.

What is SSH port forwarding?

SSH port forwarding creates an encrypted tunnel that can forward network traffic between local and remote ports.

Is this SSH generator safe?

The generator creates commands in your browser and does not need to connect to your server. Always review commands before running them and never enter private keys or passwords into the tool.

Can I use these commands on Linux?

Yes. SSH is commonly available through the OpenSSH client on Linux and macOS. Windows also provides OpenSSH on modern systems.

What is the difference between SSH and SCP?

SSH is primarily used for secure remote access and command execution, while SCP is used for secure file transfers over SSH.
