What is DNS?

DNS, or Domain Name System, translates human-readable domain names into information that computers and network services can use. For example, a domain can have DNS records that point a website to an IPv4 or IPv6 address.

DNS is also used for services such as email delivery, domain verification, certificate authority authorization and name-server delegation.

Common DNS record types

Different DNS records provide different types of information about a domain.

ADNS

IPv4 Address

Maps a domain name to an IPv4 address.

AAAADNS

IPv6 Address

Maps a domain name to an IPv6 address.

CNAMEDNS

Canonical Name

Creates an alias pointing to another domain name.

MXDNS

Mail Exchange

Specifies mail servers responsible for email delivery.

NSDNS

Name Server

Identifies authoritative name servers for a DNS zone.

TXTDNS

Text Record

Stores text information such as verification and email security data.

SOADNS

Start of Authority

Contains administrative information about a DNS zone.

CAADNS

Certificate Authority

Specifies which certificate authorities may issue certificates for a domain.

How to use the DNS Lookup tool

1

Enter a domain

Enter a domain such as example.com without requiring a full URL.

2

Choose a record

Select A, AAAA, MX, CNAME, NS, TXT, SOA or CAA.

3

Inspect results

Review the returned DNS records, TTL values and record data.

DNS troubleshooting and security

DNS information can be useful when troubleshooting website connectivity, email delivery, domain configuration and certificate-related issues.

DNS records are public infrastructure information. Avoid treating a DNS lookup alone as a complete security assessment. Security testing should only be performed on systems and domains you are authorized to assess.
